A Call to Action on Opioids in the Construction Industry
40% of Americans recently reported to having been impacted personally by the opioid crisis. The construction industry has the highest rate of death from overdose a among 20 industries at 130.9 per 100,000 workers. Over 70% of these deaths are related to opioids. Ohio has higher death rates per 100,000 of population than the US for all overdoses (48.1 vs. 32.4) and for overdose deaths attributable to opioids (40.1 vs. 48.1).

Cal Beyer, CWP is the Sr. Director of SAFE Workplaces for national nonprofit SAFE Project (SAFE stands for Stop the Addiction Fatality Epidemic). In this role, Cal is a catalyst, advocate, and a force multiplier to educate, equip, and empower leaders and organizations to address root causes of addiction AND to amplify their voices and actions to promote successful solutions in workplaces.
Cal is a Certified Wellness Practitioner through the National Wellness Institute. He has over 30 years of construction and manufacturing risk management and safety experience. He serves on the Executive Committee for the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention and the Lived Experience Advisory Committee of the Suicide Prevention Resource Center. He serves on the advisory boards for MindWise Innovations and Goldfinch Health and formerly for the Center for Workplace Mental Health and Youturn Health.
Beyer helped launch the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention in 2016. Engineering News-Record named him a Top 25 Newsmaker for 2016. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) presented him with the Mental Health Industry Advocacy Award in 2022. He was presented a Lifetime Achievement Award by United Suicide Survivors International in February 2024. Cal is a frequent speaker at industry events and a regular contributor to various industry publications.
