Jennifer Toth President | M. Rivera Construction Co.

How many years have you worked in the industry? | A little over 10 years |
Who or what has been the most influential in your career journey? | Change has been the most influential. When I was forced to look for a new career after 15 years in the airline industry, I took a leap into becoming a laborer. I then needed to make a change to move from working in the field to working in the office due to a non-work injury, and with my father’s retirement I had more change when choosing to purchase the company. Change can grow into something fulfilling and prosperous if you can embrace it. |
What was your first job in construction and how did it shape your career path? | I started as a laborer with Local 310 and worked on large projects like Cleveland Brown Stadium, Hilton Hotel, and American Greetings. My career ended in the field when I separated my shoulder tripping on my dog. I feel working in the field provides valuable insight for construction company owners and supervisors. |
What is a misconception that you think people still have about women in construction? | That we cannot do the same jobs as our male counterparts. Women in construction are strong and very capable employees. |
What strengths do you think women bring to the construction industry? | Different points of view and ways of looking at a project or problem. Women are great problems solvers. |
What advice would you give other women that are considering or new to the construction industry? | Do it. Don’t be concerned about entering a predominantly male industry. If you have the aptitude, are willing to perform the work and are dedicated to yourself and the industry, then by all means construction can afford you and your family a great life. |
What do you like to do when you're not on the job? | I enjoy going to concerts with my best friend, mother, and daughter when I am not at work. As a family we enjoy visiting National Parks. |
