Deborah Paul Project Manager | The Ruhlin Company

How many years have you worked in the industry? | 9 years |
What was your first job in construction and how did it shape your career path? | I began my career as a construction management intern, working through the summer and during my final year of college. During that time, I gained extensive hands-on experience and developed a well-rounded foundation in the industry. Building on that experience, I continued to grow professionally and worked my way up to a Project Manager role. |
What is a misconception that you think people still have about women in construction? | Although misconceptions about women in construction persist outside the industry, my own experience has shown such attitudes to be relatively uncommon. When encountered, I approach these situations with professionalism: I avoid taking them personally, remain focused on my objectives, and let my performance speak for itself. By consistently demonstrating my expertise and dedication, I contribute to breaking down outdated stereotypes and advancing a more inclusive industry culture. |
What strengths do you think women bring to the construction industry? | Women bring many strengths to the construction industry. They often approach challenges from a different perspective, which can add valuable insight to projects and lead to more well-rounded solutions. Women may also navigate conflict differently, and that approach can help diffuse tense situations before they escalate into larger problems. |
What advice would you give other women that are considering or new to the construction industry? | Being a woman in construction can sometimes mean standing out, but standing out isn’t a weakness—it’s leadership in the making. The perspectives, communication styles, resilience, and emotional intelligence women bring to job sites, boardrooms, and project teams strengthen the entire industry. Lean on women who have been in the industry longer than you and always be there for the ones that are coming behind you. |
What do you like to do when you're not on the job? | Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, cooking and baking, and watching football. |
